Extremetech reports that TDC, Denmark’s leading telecom service, plans to offer free music to its mobile phone and internet patrons from three major labels. And, believe it or not, they have full cooperation from said labels. Sony BMG, EMI, and Warner have all joined the service, which is called play, as have several Danish labels. TDC has said there’ll be 1 million songs available for free. Posted in: Music, Tech | Comments (0) |

Last year in Vienna I had the chance to know briefly the very answer I’d always sought. A museum in town was holding a special exhibition, Licht ins Dunkel, or Light in the Dark, in which the blind would actually guide the sighted through complete darkness. The darkness was cast on an elaborate maze of life simulations, from the market to the riding the bus, and even sitting at the bar. At times I’ve thought perhaps the blind see some kind of blur, a dull color at least, even an idea of who’s around them. But once I was shut completely in darkness, the answer to my question became alarmingly clear: with no light, the blind see absolutely nothing. (more…) Posted in: Reviews, Film | Comments (0) |

Oakley Inc., makers of fine, overpriced sunglasses, has filed suit against Marvel Comics, Twentieth Century Fox, and RDP Unlimiated over sunglasses used in promoting the film Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. It seems as though they feel the aforementioned sunglasses are a bit too similar to the companies’ Penny eyeglass line. Oakley wishes to prevent any more of the glasses, and, for those yet to be distributed to be destroyed. A few weeks ago rock band Foo Fighters also sued against Marvel over their unauthorized use of one of their songs in an online trailer. Hopefully they’ll make it out of this unscathed. “Catch on fire? We can’t do that. We cannot burn Mick Jagger.” There is a new clip up on myspace of Scorsese’s Rolling Stones concert film, Shine a Light. It’s just a bit of a behind the scenes tease material, mostly of Marty setting up his shots and talking about direction. There is an introduction to the clip by Marty as well, talking about what the Stones’ music means to him. It hits theaters on April 4th on 35mm and IMAX. Can’t wait. You can also now add Marty as a friend. Once in a lifetime opportunity, folks. Thank you, internet. Posted in: Celebrity, Music, Film | Comments (0) |

I suppose we can call this the second entry in our interview series about mumblecore, to be snooty and high-brow about it. Well, we’re not Film Comment, so we’ll just say this is another interview. Aaron Katz is my favorite of the mumblecore filmmakers (and so he is forgiven for wearing a Mets hat in that picture). He’s made two films so far, Dance Party, USA and Quiet City, which landed at #6 on my 2007 top 10 list. The films are hugely different, but bear the same marks of a gifted filmmaker. Dance Party, USA is a challenging film about, oh, how to put this…the pitfalls of suburban teenage malaise, whereas Quiet City is a more serene and improbable Brooklyn love story. Both films were released as part of a two disc set from Benten films in January. Rob: How did the whole meet-up between the key guys, you, the Duplass brothers, Andrew Bujalski, and Joe Swanberg happen? Aaron Katz: I met Joe first, at SxSW 2006. I had Dance Party, USA there and Joe had LOL. I met a bunch of filmmakers there, and then I went around to other film festivals and you sort of end up running into the same people. For as long as I can remember, there has recurred a peculiar question in my mind. It’s a question of which my own experience could not answer, and which, frankly, I never hoped I could answer by my own experience. In fact, to hope for first-hand knowledge would strike most as downright bonkers. In spite of this, the question has never left me: What does a blind person “see”? It may sound silly even to ask, wondering what someone without sight is able to see, but in my own life of constant sight, it baffles the mind that some survive, even flourish, without it.
