Download Why?, Themselves Collaboration

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Anticon has posted “Canada,” a collaboration between WHY? and Themselves, for free download. Yup, free. Given the general hipsters love of all things free, this should bring lots of attention to each group’s forthcoming LPs, soon to be released by the label.

Give it a listen and tell us what you think.

XBLA Deal of the Week: Penny-Arcade Adventures: Episode 2

Monday, August 31st, 2009

The second episode of Hothead’s adventure game/RPG/webcomic hybrid is now the XBLA Deal of the Week.

Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode Two (or OtterPod, as Jerry “Tycho” Holkins has been known to call it) continues the story of your created character joining forced with the steam-punk versions of Gabe and Tycho in New Arcadia on the heals of old gods out to destroy the world.

The normally 1200 point ($15) title has been reduced to only 800 space bucks, or $10 to us Earth folks, in honor of this week’s Penny-Arcade Expo.

When I asked Tycho at Emerald City ComiCon when we could expect episode three, his response was that they are working on it, and it will most likely not be out until 2010.

Jade Raymond to Head Up Ubi Toronto

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Ubisoft officially announced today that Jade Raymond, the talented AND attractive producer of Assassin’s Creed, will head up day-to-day operations at the company’s new Toronto studio. This, of course, raised accusations of her being too young/only being a pretty face/she just knows the right people from various folks in the industry. Same ol’, same ol’, yup.

The new studio will reportedly focus on “bridging” Ubi’s properties with other forms of media. If that means a Turtles in Time movie, count us in.

Disney Makes Marvel Theirs

Monday, August 31st, 2009

When Disney and Pixar merged, many feared the creativity the later possessed would be taken over by the former’s greed. Thankfully, the deal Pixar brokered with the mouse placed John Lasseter in a high position that would prevent those fears from being realized. Today, the same fears have emerged for Marvel Entertainment as the Walt Disney Corporation just purchased it for $4 billion.

Could a cross-over between the X-Men and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody be imminent? If early indications are accurate, we can safely say no. Disney doesn’t want to change the way Marvel does things; they just want to bring their characters to a bigger market. Look for a greater Marvel presence on the Disney Channel, Disney Land and Disney World, and, if we’re lucky, in the next Kingdom Hearts game.

John Rambo Will Return in Rambo V

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Sylvester Stallone will soon don the red headband once again for a fifth adventure featuring everyone’s favorite geriatric action hero, John Rambo. The cleverly-titled Rambo V was greenlit by Nu Image/Millennium Films over the weekend.

According to Variety, the next installment will feature Rambo battling a band of human traffickers and drug lords to rescue a child kidnapped near the United State’s border with Mexico. Isn’t that really what they’re all about, though?

Stallone, as he did with 2008’s Rambo, will write, direct, and star. Production is scheduled to begin this spring. As we mentioned in our post about Rob Zombie remaking the blob, God help us all.

The Green Hornet Pushed Back

Monday, August 31st, 2009

It looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see Seth Rogen and Michelle Gondry’s The Green Hornet. The film was supposed to be released in July 2010, however, it has now officially been delayed until September.

“It gives more time for post,” Rogen tells Hitfix, “which would have been immensely rushed if we were to come out in the summer. It also affords us more time to promote the film . . .”

Given that this film has been in the works in various forms for over a decade, we think we can wait a few extra months to see it. How about you?

Review: Offworld by Robin Parrish

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Allow me to preface this review with a confession: I’m a space nut. Generally, I find all things relating to space appealing in some form or another. Works of non-fiction or fiction about space, NASA bed sheets with pictures of space, telescopes allowing me to look at space, space heaters – it’s all good!

Now that I’ve got that out of the way, I have a book I’d like to tell you about – Robin Parrish’s Offworld. The book chronicles the return voyage of Earth’s first manned mission to Mars in the year 2033. Panic ensues as they embark on their trip home and they lose contact with Ground Control. They manage to execute a safe emergency landing in a location quite far from where they’d intended to go. Once they’re out of their craft, they find out why Houston… … Review: Offworld by Robin Parrish

The Beatles: Rock Band TV Spot

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

EA and Harmonix are truly pulling out all the stops in making The Beatles: Rock Band one classy product. The latest commercial for the game is a sure sign that they want to differentiate it from other band-centric rhythm games and really capture the spirit of The Beatles and the Beatlemania movement.
