Trailer for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Seth Graham-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was quite a novelty upon its release. Sadly, the runaway success of that tome has inspired a countless number of imitators. A quick glance at Amazon reveals several classic/zombie mash-up books that would make even the most forgiving book nerd cringe.

Quirk Classics, the publisher responsible for the more readable mash-ups, released a trailer yesterday for a PPZ prequel, Dawn of the Dreadfuls (out March 23), which will put the PPZ characters in a Dawn of the Dead-esque scenario. Graham-Smith passed the torch to Steve Hockensmith this time out. View the trailer below and let us know if zombie over-saturation will prevent you from buying the book.

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Ghosts of Ascalon, Jeff Grubb and Matt Forbeck’s novel set in the world of Guild Wars, will be released in North America and Europe this summer. Grubb and Forbeck have each penned novels in the realms of Starcraft, Warcraft, and Magic: The Gathering. Whether or not their resume is a good thing is up to you, the reader, to decide.

Cameron to Pen Avatar Novel

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Today, director James Cameron announced plans to write a tome that delves further into Pandora, the vibrant world first visited in Avatar. He says it’ll “dig deeper” into the world and give insight into the character’s “interior monologues.” We’re guessing he’ll put more effort into believable dialog for this since 3D and special effects cannot be used here. That is, unless he develops a new Kindle plugin that turns the text blue and has it projected above the device’s screen.

Do you actually care enough about Avatar’s characters to bother reading a 200-300 page novel?

Verne’s 20,000 Leages Gets the Video Game Treatment

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is FINALLY making its way to the video game world! Wait a second. This won’t be handled by Visceral Games? Okay, we’ll deliver the rest of the announcement in a less-excited fashion.

“Scientist Pierre Arronax is taken prisoner together with his loyal servant Conseil and harpooner Ned Land onboard the Nautilus,” reads the plot description, “the submarine commanded by legendary Captain Nemo. As new members of his crew, they take part in a fabulous, yet perilous, voyage across the oceans round the globe.”

The gameplay involves scouring games recreated from the novel for hidden artifacts and key objects. The press release we received mentioned “casual gaming” right away, so complexity will definitely not be an issue. This Daedalic-developed title will be available on Mac and PC soon.

Author J.D. Salinger Passes Away

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Author J.D. Salinger, 91, passed away due to natural causes at his home in New Hampshire. While the author isolated himself from the world for the most part, we did hear from him recently. He stepped into the spotlight long enough to prevent the release of 60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye, an unauthorized sequel to his beloved Catcher in the Rye.

NPR has a lengthy write up on the author’s life and career, which we recommend taking a look at. It’s available via the source link.

Flexible thespian Doug Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) has inked a deal with Medallion Press to model for Mime Very Own Book. The tome will be comprised of a collection of images from the day-to-day life of a “silent emoter” played by Jones. Eric Curtis will take the photographs; Scott Allen Perry and Adam Mock will handle the writing. With a sense of humor that combines Seinfeld and The Far Side, we’re quite sure Mime Very Own Book will appeal to the average ‘Funk reader. It’ll be available in December for $24.95 in the US.

Titan Books to Release Firefly Short Story Collection

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Titan Books has announced plans to release a collection of short stories that take place within the ‘verse of Joss Whedon’s Firefly. So far, Jane Epsenson, Ben Edlund (yes THAT Ben Edlund), and Jose Molina have mentioned contributing to the project. Given that they were all three involved with the series, odds are the books will be quite faithful.

Excited about the possibility of more adventures with Cap’n Mal & Company? If so, you may gush as much as you wish in the comments.
