Elzie Segar’s Popeye may now be used by anyone in the European union. The EU’s copyright laws protect any creator’s creation for 70 years after their death. Segar died in 1938.
The character may now appear on anything, be it for profit or non. Newsarama suggest that any unauthorized use will most likely be met with a legal challenge, though.
The character of Popeye is protected on American shores until 2024.

Game Informer for January 2009. Page 12. There’s a small box in Game Informer’s monthly installment The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. It’s (old news) about Activision-Blizzard dropping Vivendi title Ghostbusters because of the Intellectual Property’s (IP) lack of continuous exploitability.
Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters! This is the game that’s supposed to be the Ghostbusters III we never got. Dan Aykroyd is writing the storyline, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson are giving their voices. This is a big deal in the nerd community…And Activision dropped it.

Image Comics will offer a special, full 32-page issue of the Savage Dragon at next year’s Free Comic Book Day. Savage Dragon #148 FCBD Edition will be a stand-alone comic that creator Erik Larsen hopes will be a good “jumping on” point for new fans of the series. In the issue, Dragon will re-join the Chicago Police Force and a new character will be introduced. That’s an awful lot of bang for no buck at all. Kudos, Image Comics.
Earlier this week Marvel announced a fairly action-packed issue of The Avengers will debut as part of Free Comic Book Day as well. Good to see the big dogs actually producing grade A material for giveaways in lieu of the usual tripe.
